Blanding's Turtle on Lake HallettA mid-September 2003 Lake Hallett discovery uncovered a rare adult Blanding's Turtle. The Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is classifed as Threatened by the Minnesota Dept of Natural Resources.
This male Blanding found on Lake Hallett measured more than 10 inches. Blandings Turtles this size are considered rare. This mature male may be as old as 70 years. Blanding's Turtle is of great interest to the Minnesota DNR. An ongoing survey is being conducted by the DNR to locate areas where this rare species is found and to provide critical protection of their habitat to ensure its continued presence in Minnesota. If you should find a Blanding's Turtle you should not disturb it. You should contact the DNR and report its location and its status. The DNR may wish to monitor and study this turtle and its habitat. This Blanding's Turtle was reported to the local DNR. The DNR Officer marked this turtle with two small holes on its upper right corner of the shell. If you find a marked turtle that has expired you should report it to the DNR so it may update its tracking database.
